I’m not going to add yet another. I am going to give you our one big overarching argument.

You can also find lists on why to not build with WordPress and instead use one of the numerous other platforms available. Most of them are mis-informed or have a strange or uniquely bad experience similar to my friend’s dislike for cats because he once had a cat that sprayed poop through his childhood home. That’s just not normal! Yet, to be clear, there are reasons to not build with WordPress and I’m happy to be honest about those — they just probably don’t apply to you.

So, I’m going to simply tell you the biggest umbrella reason we recommend WordPress to nearly everyone over any other option that exists. Almost each and every bullet point we could list out for the perks of using WordPress would fall under this one reason that makes it the best: WordPress is a future proof solution.

Future Proof?

I built my first website somewhere around year 2000. I used a now mostly-defunct solution called “Tripod” and I hacked something together that was, for the time, pretty awesome. Everyone was impressed. Within a few years, that software service and business was changing and mostly done for.

While you might argue that was the early 2000s, so, of course things changed and collapsed since then, I’ve seen this same thing happen numerous times in the last 15+ years. Even if a solution gets pretty large and sees quite a lot of success and adoption, they can eventually get lazy with their success, get left behind in internet changes because they’re too invested in something else, or sell to new leadership that has other desires and thus morphed into something else you never wanted.

The vas majority of the time, none of that is good for you!

Most of us don’t start businesses that we plan to only do for a few months or even a few years. But, if we’re honest, most of us also aren’t thinking past about two years out because, well, that’s hard to do! Maybe that’s why most businesses close down in less than 3 years though!

The truth is — and I know this from experience — you need something that is going to change and adapt with your business or organization (and even personal) changes and needs! You need something that is going to adapt to the world’s (and especially, internet’s) changes and trends. You also need a solution that will do this without breaking your bank.

The  “future-proofness” of WordPress is why it shines brighter than any other solution, by far!

But Wait, Let’s Be Clear: There Are Two Forms Of WordPress

This is a crucial time to explain an important distinction you may not know. “WordPress” comes in two forms: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

The .com version is a hosted solution similar to many other solutions out there on which you can start a free site on. It is built and owned by some original founders of the WordPress software and is a huge company now. You can eventually buy a domain there, buy more space from them, and be happy — locked into their system and what they allow. If you’re dipping your toe in the water of personal blogging (that’s all we’d recommend it for), then go for it. It’s a good solution for that. If you do grow, you can more easily migrate out of that system to the .org solution (everything maps easily since it’s the same software under the hood.

The .org Self-Hosted Solution Is The Good Stuff

For my argument, I’m talking about WordPress.org, which is the open source and free software solution that anyone can download and install on a web server and build a website with for free.

You see, part of the future-proofness of WordPress is that it is “open source.” The term “open source” is a beautiful term. It means that millions of people around the globe constantly maintain and improve the core code base of this software. Yes there are other similar open source solutions as well (things like Joomla and Drupal and many more), but none of them have as large, vibrant and decentralized of development. Nor do they have as large of an ecosystem around them providing you with countless possibilities for your future.

Of course nothing is ever completely decentralized, and there is a team of people who oversee the codebase and maintain quality. This is a positive thing though. Anyone is still free to utilize, benefit from, and even change the software for themselves if they desire.

This has made WordPress the leading software for powering a constantly growing 28% or more of the entire internet’s websites. There is no one company getting all the benefit or making all the decisions.

As the internet changes — and oh does it change! — there are millions of people changing your possibilities within the WordPress ecosystem to adapt to whatever you want or need next whether it’s new code language advancements or just layout trends! Your options are nearly infinite!

You want abundant options as a business or non-profit organization trying to grow up! Who knows what you’ll need tomorrow!

This Is What Overwhelms People About WordPress.org

However, all these options is also where WordPress becomes daunting to most people. It’s why creative agencies and freelancers abound in this ecosystem. We’re here to help, and the truth is, sometimes you need help! I even paid someone to help me the first year I stepped into the WordPress world.

Looking back now, I paid for the most simple, basic stuff I could do in my sleep these days. Plus, the freelancer wasn’t very forthright with helpful information (just wanting to keep me dumb to make money off of me). Yet, I didn’t know and couldn’t have been expected to know at that point. We all have to start and the important thing is to just start — even if that means hiring a guide!

Do your best to read articles like these, find people who will be honest and share more than you could ever want to know, and make the best decision you can!

A Super Practical Recap

So what does this mean for you in a very pragmatic sense? Good question.

First and foremost, it means you’re not simply being sucked in by some company that locks you into their little walled garden with their multi-million dollar per-year marketing budget. Yep, I’m looking at you Wix and SquareSpace. Bleh.

Those companies are decent options for a few in specific scenarios (and we’ll happily tell you if that’s you), but they’re not the best options for most. What happens is, like I said, you’re locked into only what they offer you and only what you’ll pay the price for from their offerings.

Contrast that to this: If you have SOZO.DO get you all set up and build your website for you, and then we maintain your installation and keep it updated and secure, at any point you can say, “Hey we want to start offering a different product combination of this,” and we say, “Sure no problem! You can do that! Want us to make that change for you or do you want to do it yourself!?”

You’re all set! At all times! For anything!

Seriously, and I’m telling you this up front: If you ever want to learn how to use everything and run your own themes and plugins and updates and such, you are free to do that and get rid of us! If you ever want to hire your nephew to do it all, you’re free to do it and get rid of us!

You’re set up for success in any way you want to make it happen — not locked into funding our success!

Our goal is to help you be successful! The same thing I’d want if I was starting out and paying someone for help!

Sound Too Good To Be True, Eh? Ask Questions

Now I know this has been a general fly-over and you may not feel I touched on your specific issue or worry. That’s because there are far too many of them to do in one general post.

Again though, you can take my word for it from years and years of experience — an educated word that’s always playing with the other solutions that pop up and fade away year after year, WordPress can handle your [not-so] unique situation!

It can handle it powerfully and beautifully!

“But I heard it was primarily just for bloggers?”

Nope!

“But can I…”

Yep!

“Are you sure…”

Absolutely! I’ve done it!

Still, I’ll leave the comments section open on this post and answer each and every question you might have whether you’re a potential client or you just stumbled onto this randomly. I’m glad to help out and provide clarity on anything I can!
